It stands for world wide web - so it's three times as many syllables.

I'm not sure what the objection is to its use in print, though, because
it's very easy to type and isn't particularly long. And as this thread
shows, it makes it easier for programs such as StrongED to recognise it
for what it is.
and is so ugly to say that
...some people (including me) just say "wuh wuh wuh".
Well, sometimes, anyway - it largely depends on the person I'm saying it to.
