Yes. Some examples might be useful.

So far I've been using background colours - see

which is my test page to make sure a large area of colour would not be
an eye-strain or a distraction.

But too many different colours gets confusing. Same with too many text
colours or any other differences. Certainly I am not in favour of using a
marker of any type unless it has a lot of use.
