The change itself is probably not too difficult (I'd need to check the
specifics). However it would mean either special casing the S&R window
or changing the one-window concept completely.

I'll keep this in mind though as I'm considering combining the LoF and
S&R dialogue boxes. Perhaps making the S&R window truly permanent can
be fitted in somewhere.

The S&R window will close if clicking outside of it causes it to lose
input focus so you need to make sure that doesn't happen.

One option would be to copy one of the strings to the global clipboard
and select the other. You can then transfer one string using c-V and the
other with F7.
