Many thanks as always, Fred, but my brain hurts by now.

Done that, and it doesn't appear in the AutoSave directory. I don't 
think I'll have time to do more investigation for several days, but I 
promise I will come back to it sometime, and try to do an update from 
11 to 12 rather more carefully as soon as I can. I'm sure I must have 
done something wrong.

In fact, so far 4.70a11 has behaved perfectly since I restored it from 
a backup. Anyway, as I said above, I'll try again sometime, and will 
report back.
