How are you opening the "Freetext search" window, from an open manual or
from the iconbar menu?

If you open it from a manual then the drop down list is shaded as it is
implicitly assumed that you want to search that manual.

If you open the "Freetext search" window from the iconbar menu then the
drop down list is available.
