As it turns out, it wasn't a StrongED problem; see below for how
things can get inadvertently get fouled up :-(

I really didn't think, Fred, that you would do anything about this on
yesterday of all days. Doing so was, in words I heard on the radio
years ago, A & B the C of D (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty).

Doing a bit of lateral thinking, I looked for all the occurrences of
!Boot in the eponymous directory, and it became rapidly apparent what
had happened. Somehow !NewsDir had become corrupted, and its !Boot and
!Run files had become typed as text. So, as !NewsDir is set to be
looked at during startup, the OS was doing exactly what it was told to
do, and running, that is displaying, that file. The reason why Edit
had snatched is is presumably as it is booted before StrongED during
the start-up routine.

Sorry to have interrupted Fred's Christmas, but maybe my thinking was
a bit impaired yesterday as well. I blame it on my daughter's and
son-in-law's hospitality :-)

Best wishes,

Peter.
