[StrongED] Unexplained beep

A year ago I added a StrongED mode to MBBack's zip file for
syntax-colouring its source files:

Now, there's something which puzzles me greatly about that mode.  The
first time it is used by StrongED, whether that be creating a new file,
or loading a file which matches the ModeWhen, I hear a beep.  This beep
never occurs again in the same StrongED session, and is not accompanied
by any error message.  The mode itself otherwise seems to work fine in
all respects.

Any idea what's causing it?
