...Well, that's rather pointless, isn't it?

What search string would perform the intended action in this case?
Indeed, is there any way to exclude a match at all?  (If I read your
explanation correctly, the problem only affects searches which must not
be preceded by something - if the ~ is in the middle or the end, it
should work.)
