further to my query that started this thread on Feb 25, the thlot 
pickens:

after a reboot earlier today, i ran StrongEd before a lot of the stuff 
i normally have running -- and it launched normally.

are there known conflicts between StrongEd and any other app?  here's 
a list of apps that are not in my boot sequence but are typically on 
my iconbar before StrongEd:
     Datapower 3.10
     Netsurf r9799 (currently)
     Edit
     Draw
     Artworks 2.82
     Impression 5.13
     Fireworkz 1.32
     FTPc 1.42
     HTMLedit 5.04
     Ovation Pro 2.77m
     !scan (David Pilling) 1.24
     Techwriter 8.73b
