[StrongED] "string not recognized" error

lately, whenever i try to run StrongEd i get a "string not recognized" 
error, &0000 00FD from an "unknown" application.  (apps should 
identify themselves!)

this happens even if i merely open* the directory containing StrongEd, 
which would lead me to suspect something in its !boot file.  however, 
i have made no changes to !StrongEd.!boot.

*i mean open it for a first time in a session; subsequent openings do 
not produce the error.  but doubleclicking the !run file does give the 
error; i cannot get StrongEd onto the iconbar.

i have version 4.68, current according to www.stronged.iconbar.com -- 
using RiscPC with OS 4.39.
