Automatically, when Transient is first run on any day or, if Transient
is running continuously, at 12:00 midnight.

I'm not familiar with Perl but, using RO6.20
*help rename
==> Help on keyword Rename (FileSwitch)
*Rename changes the name of an object. It cannot be used to move
objects between filing systems or between discs on the same filing
system; *Copy with the D(elete) option must be used instead.
Syntax: *Rename <object> <new name>

Try *filer_openDir <Transient$TodayDir> , which works here.
