[StrongED] Transient

How and when does Transient create its new Transient$TodayDir ?

I have a backup program which back up over the newtork to
Transient$TodayDir and it's not working. An error is given. e.g.:
File name '.Resources' not recognised

The call was (from a Perl program):

system ("Roscli -wimp office Rename ADFS::HD5.\$.Resources
|<Transient$TodayDir>.Resources");

As the program used to run fine before Transient, this seemed to say that
<Transient$TodayDir> does not exist at that time (03:00 a.m.). 

But digging a little deeper, opening a TaskWindow and typing 
filer_openDir Transient$TodayDir
gives the error
File name 'Transient$TodayDir' not recognised

Yet *show Trans* shows
Transient$TodayDir : ADFS::HD4.$.DataApps.Transient.Default.2010/01/08

Anyone any idea?
